Studying Arthritis, Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Included below are links to two recent publications where researchers used 1000 Genomes Project data to study two types of arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and is caused by wear and tear on our joints. In the first study, researchers used 1000 Genomes Project data as part of a larger genetic study looking for risk factors for osteoarthritis. They identified several promising risk factors, which may be used for better diagnosis and treatment.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a less common type of arthritis that is caused by a person’s own immune system attacking their joints. In the second study, researchers studied variation in a gene called IGH, and used 1000 Genomes Project data to better understand common and rare variants that may increase the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.
