Genome-wide Association Study Identifies Multiple Susceptibility Loci for Glioma

12/2015

Led by scientists at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, an international team of investigators completed the largest ever study of DNA derived from individuals affected with glioma; the most common form of brain cancer.

Utilizing 1000 Genomes data as a reference, researchers discovered 5 previously unknown variants associated with the disease. Scientists conducted a meta-analysis of 4,167 affected and 7,435 control individuals and used imputation to identify these variants.

Utilization of 1000 Genomes data proved a cost effective means to conduct this type of research on such a large set of genetic variants.
